Diamond Multispecies Overseeding 1 HA Pack

Diamond Multispecies Overseeding 1 HA Pack combines 6 species for this innovative mix. The Diamond Multispecies Overseeding Pack, integrates 2 selected grass species, 2 proven legume species and 2 trusted forage herbs. This mixture creates a sward that has the ability to provide a wide range of services.

Nitrogen fixation – legumes will fix nitrogen from the air to feed the sward. This will allow a reduction in fertiliser N applications without losing forage production. The quantity of nitrogen fixed is principally dependent on the proportion of legume in the sward and the amount of fertiliser N applied (clover seems to get lazy when fertiliser N is applied and fixes less N). The best legume species are White Clover for grazing and a mix of Red Clover and White Clover for silage.

  • Reduction of Nitrogen leaching. – Plantain has very good diuretic properties which may reduce the risk of Nitrogen leaching.

  • High palatability – clovers and herbs have proven to be very palatable and this leads to high forage intakes by the livestock. This is more noticeable during summer months, when grasses usually become stemmy.

  • Higher protein in silage – Including high clover swards for silage, results in higher protein levels in the silage produced, compared to grass only. This increased protein level may allow a lower protein feed to be used. Be aware of the protien needs of your livestock.  Growing weanlings and finishing beef animals both require a higher dietary protein.

  • Drought resilience – Plantain and Chicory have been chosen due to their deep root systems. The deeper root systems gives the plant greater resilience during drought conditions allowing growth when grass struggles. Clovers and Meadow Fescue have proven to perform better than Perennial Ryegrass in drought conditions.

  • Nutrition from deeper layers – The deep root systems of Plantain and Chicory facilitate the collection of nutrients from deeper layers of the soil which promotes additional growth which in turn  is made available to the livestock and provides a more balanced diet.

  • Weed suppression – The differing heights, shapes and spread of the species in this mix, provide the opportunity to outcompete weeds. Smothering weed growth with varied and do not provide the establishment of weeds species in the sward.

Main Advantages of Species included in Diamond Muiltispecies Sward:

White Clover – This can prove to be very persistent under tight frequent grazing. Is able to spread via stolons to increase proportion and improve persistence.

Red Clover – Has demonstrated more aggressive growth and N fixation in year of establishment. However it does not perform well under tight grazing.

Ribworth Plantain – More robust under frequent tight grazing. Diuretic effect, with deeper rooting N capture, helps reduce Nitrogen leaching into groundwater. Higher mineral content than grasses

Chicory – has been found to be a very highly digestible leaf material, giving animal performance benefits in early life of sward. Also does not perform well under tight grazing. May contain some antiparasitic properties.

Red Clover
Tap root structure is less persistent under tight grazing but is more aggressive growth and N fixation in year of establishment. Red Clover swards are high in protein and normally expect 60% to be true protein. Red Clover silage will usually have a crude protein content of 15-20%. It is highly digestible and highly palatable leading to high intake

White clover
This clover has a good yield and has the best spread . A good choice for grazing and dual-purpose swards.

Ribwort Plantain
Ribwort Plantain has proven to be the most persistent forage herb even under intensive grazing. The plantain has the potential to last for an impressive 5 years. The Ribwort Plantain has a diuretic effect on cattle. This causes an increase in urination in the cattle, which has the effect of more nitrogen being sprayed more evenly across the paddock area but in lower concentrations. The deep root structure of the Ribwort Plantain allows it to prevail to Nutrients and Nitrogen at deeper levels in the soil. It also enables the Plantain to be able to be more resilient to the effects of drought.

Chicory
Extremely highly digestible leaf material, giving animal performance benefits in early life of sward. Proven not to be persistent under very tight grazing. Antiparasitic properties.

What is the difference between Tetraploid and Diploid?

The main difference between diploid and tetraploid ryegrass is the number of chromosomes per cell.
Diploid plants have two sets of chromosomes per cell whilst tetraploids have four.

As a result Tetraploids have an increased cell size and have a higher ratio of cell contents (soluble carbohydrates) to cell wall (fibre). This means that tetraploids have a higher water content per cell and are more palatable. This leads to a high graze out of livestock. However with less tillers tetraploids have a worse ground cover rate which can leave a gappy sward. This can be good for allowing clover to grow but can if are the only grass in a sward can leave the pasture exposed to poaching.

Diploid in comparison have more tillers per plant meaning they will have better ground cover than tetraploids. Due to the lower water content per cell, diploids have a higher dry matter per kg of feed, meaning they cure and wilt easier when making hay or silage. They also offer more energy than tetraploid plants.

Both diploid and tetraploid plants will have similar protein levels. A mix of both is required regardless of what you are looking from your grass. However a higher percentage of tetraploid is better for grazing while a greater number of Diploids is more advisable for silage or hay meadows.

Animal performance benefits of Tetraploids.

Tetraploid ryegrasses offer several benefits in terms of animal performance. Due to the higher ratio of cell contents to cell wall, tetraploid plants offer several benefits for animal performance.

One benefit is that it is more palatable to animals which improves intake and therefore leads to an increased animal production.  In addition tetraploid cells consist of easily available nutrients, such as sugars and starches necessary for more efficient rumen function.

However it is important to remember that tetraploids  higher water content in the cells so when livestock are full from grazing the actual dry matter intake could be lower compared to that of diploids plants.

A mix of tetraploid and diploid ryegrass could achieve a more balanced pasture, retaining a good level of dry matter production, an improved balance of quality feed and if used for silage will be more easily cured than a pure tetraploid pasture.

Grazing management.

It is important to monitor grazing pressures on tetraploid ryegrasses as they are sensitive to overgrazing because of their excellent palatability. If grazing occurs to a lower level than with diploid ryegrasses it may compromise persistence. Similar to diploid ryegrasses, tetraploid ryegrass require nitrogen applications to a similar level to ensure good growth after grazing.

Farm management benefits.

Tetraploid ryegrasses have higher establishment costs than diploids as the recommended sowing rate for tetraploids is higher due to the larger size of the seed (2-3 times heavier). If planting tetraploid ryegrass in a mix, the plants will allow up to 10% more clover in the pasture due to the reduced tiller density promoting an increased pasture quality.

What are the advantages of reseeding grass?

  • Reseeding grass is one of the highest paying investments that a livestock farmer can take advantage of.
  • Reseeding will deliver higher grass dry matter yields and higher quality of grass.
  • For every tonne of grass dry matter used there is an increase in profit of up to €160 for the farm.
  • Reseeding will increase your grass production by at least 10% each year.
