Key Features of Abacare
Lungworm:
Symptoms: Short, sharp cough that becomes worse with exercise, in severe cases the animal will have obvious difficulty breathing.
Effects: Lungworm infections cause a high susceptibility to respiratory viruses and bacteria. Infected cattle are prone to contracting severe bronchial pneumonia which if left untreated can lead to death.
|
Roundworm:
Symptoms: Lack of thrive, watery scour, loss of weight
Effects: Roundworms can puncture the blood vessels of a cow to feed on their blood. This can lead to anemia, poor growth, malnutrition and if left untreated can cause death.

5 PHARMACOLOGICAL or IMMUNOLOGICAL PROPERTIES
Abamectin or Avermectin B1 is the natural fermentation product from Streptomyces avermitilis containing not less than 90% of the B1a component and not more than 10% of the B1b component.
ATC Vetcode:
QP54AA02
5.1 Pharmacodynamic properties
The action of the avermectins is on nematode and arthropod parasites by paralysing them through potentiating the presynaptic release of gamma amino butyric acid (GABA).
5.2 Pharmacokinetic particulars
The pharmacokinetic profile of avermectins may be influenced by the formulation used.
Abacare Pour-on is formulated in a carrier vegetable oil base. Vegetable oils are preferred to effectively cause permeation through the skin. The persistent (35 days) blood levels of Abamectin reflected this.
Avermectins are widely dispersed in all tissues with the liver and fat levels being the highest.
Excretion is mainly intra intestinal, through bile, and the drug is eliminated via the faeces.

What is Abamectin
Abamectin is a widely used insecticide and anthelmintic.
Abamectin, is a member of the Avermectin family and is a natural fermentation product of soil dwelling actinomycete Streptomyces avermitilis.
Abamectin (also called Avermectin B1), differs from Ivermectin, the popular member of the Avermectin family, by double bond on C-22-25.
Fermentation of Streptomyces avermitilis yields 8 closely related Avermectin homologues out of which B1 (a and b) forms the bulk of the fermentation.
The non-proprietary name, abamectin, is a combination of Bla (~ 80%) and B1b (~ 20%).
Out of all the Avermectins, abamectin is the only one that is used both in agriculture and pharmaceuticals.
How does Abamectin work?
Avermectins bind to the glutamate-gated chloride channels that are found in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells.
They cause hyperpolarization of these cells resulting in paralysis and death.
Mammals only possess glutamate-gated chloride channels in the brain and spinal cord and as the Avermectins have a low affinity for other mammalian ligand-gated channels and do not usually cross the blood–brain barrier, they are very safe for mammals.
